Blog Tour: The Holders by Julianna Scott

-->17-year-old Becca spent her whole life protecting her brother from, well, everything. The abandonment of their father, the so called 'experts' who insist that voices in his head are unnatural and must be dealt with, and the constant threat of being taken away to some hospital and studied like an animal.

When two representatives appear claiming to have the answers to Ryland's perceived problem, Becca doesn't buy it for one second. That is until they seem to know things about Ryland and about Becca and Ryland's family, that forces Becca to concede that there may be more to these people than meets the eye.

Though still highly skeptical, Becca agrees to do what's best for Ryland. What they find at St. Brigid's is a world beyond their imagination. Little by little they piece together the information of their family's heritage, their estranged Father, and the legend of the Holder race that decrees Ryland is the one they've been waiting for.

She meets Alex, a Holder who is fiercely loyal to their race, and for some reason, Becca and Ryland. There's an attraction between Becca and Alex that can't be denied, but destiny gets in the way, and they are all in for a surprise that will change what they thought they knew about themselves and their kind forever.

THE HOLDERS is a modern day fantasy about incredible powers and extraordinary people.

JULIANNA SCOTT was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and spent the majority of her educational career convinced she would be a musician. However, after receiving her music degree from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, she realized that she'd been born in the wrong era for her dreams of singing jazz to adoring fans clad in zoot-suits and flapper dresses to come true, and began to wonder if her true calling might be elsewhere.

While Julianna had always excelled in writing throughout school, she'd never considered it a career possibility until about three years ago, when she'd gotten her first story idea and decided to go for it. She grabbed her laptop, started typing away, and has never looked back.

Review: The Truth About Letting Go by Leigh Talbert Moore

Title: The Truth About Letting Go
Author: Leigh Talbert Moore

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Young Adult
Format: ARC eBook from Author

Buy:  iTunes | Kobo | Amazon | B&N

Ashley wants to smash everything in her once-perfect life.
Charlotte wants to walk in Ashley's seemingly charmed shoes.

Colt wants to turn Smalltown USA on its ear--with Ashley at his side.

Jordan wants to follow his heart... but Ashley is the one sacrifice he never expected to make.

Ashley Lockett has always followed the rules. She's always done the right thing, played it safe, gone to church. And then her ideal life is shattered when her dad dies suddenly.

Fueled by anger and grief, she vows to do everything opposite of how she lived before. She rejects safety, rules, faith, and then she meets Jordan.

Jordan has big dreams, he's had a crush on Ashley for years, and he's a great kisser. But he's also safe.

Enter Colt. He is not safe, and he's more than willing to help Ashley fulfill her vow.

Leigh Talbert Moore always manages to write with a hidden message. This book is no different than her other work. The Truth About Letting Go gives you a sense of hope, tells you never to hide, numb or run away from the pain. But to accept it and let it go. Because that's the only way, you'll ever be able to move on.

Ashley Lockett is a popular, beautiful cheerleader, who went through a life changing tragedy. Her life went from perfect to horrid in the span of 6 months. Now, all she wants to do is numb out the pain with just about anyone. But then a rule-breaking athlete, Colt, rolls into town and he does everything in his power to make her his partner in crime. And together, Ashley does stupid things she never saw herself doing. Stupid things, she knows she'll regret.

Ashley is a likeable protagonist, and by default, the protagonists always annoys me one way or another. After her fathers death, Ashley becomes very self-destructive, irrational and all together stupid. She made bad choices in the worst time of her life and I can't blame her for making them. I just can't help but feel irritated by her when she cluelessly vandalizes things around her with a horndog like Colt. They may have steamy intimate moments but honestly, if I was her bestie, I'd knock her out of her stupidity and save her from the regret she'll surely be feeling when her head clears out.

Jordan and Charlotte are the new people in Ashley's life, that actually makes her face reality about her dad, her family and well, life. They're obviously the two people that she's better off with than Colt. But she doesn't want to be "safe", she wants adrenaline and a whole lot of rule breaking. And again, I'm annoyed at her stupid choices.

Ashley, eventually snaps out of her self-destructive phase and the journey of how she went from perfect to horrid then to acceptance is full of heartwarming, thrilling, and even swoon-worthy scenes.

To sum it all up, This book, tells you The Truth About Letting Go. The journey it takes you starting with the tears, the pain, the anger, the regret, the despair, the acceptance, and ending with letting go. Leigh portrayed the message loud and clear with appropriate characters, the friendship and the love story that helps Ashley recover from the heartbreak of losing a parent. An unputdownable contemporary romance filled with heart-wrenching moments, and a beautiful message that will make you cry as you go through the book with the protagonist.

Excerpt

I feel Colt laugh, and he looks down into my face. That’s when he seems to realize what I’ve been acutely aware of for the last several minutes—our bodies are pressed together. “It’s awesome, yeah?” he says. “Adrenaline rush.” “Yeah,” I breathe. “I guess.” I’m not sure if he’s going to kiss me until he does. His mouth covers mine, and energy mixes with the alcohol flooding my body. Our tongues slide together, and I grip his shirt so I don’t collapse.  Every single bit of this is wrong, and there’s no way I’m stopping it. It’s back, that good feeling. The sadness has been pushed out again, and in its place is this rush, this rush of adrenaline like Colt said.  He pulls back and smiles at me. “We’re going to start dating. Now. You’re my partner in crime.”

Promo Post: Broken Wings (Angel Eyes #2) by Shannon Dittemore

Welcome to my stop on the Broken Wings blog tour hosted by YA Bound.  Click HERE to see the full blog tour schedule!

PROMO POST

--> Today, we’re chatting with author, Shannon Dittemore. We’re talking about her writing and the second book in the Angel Eyes trilogy, Broken Wings.

Tell us about Broken Wings?

Broken Wings picks up seven months after Angel Eyes ends. Jake and Brielle have been dating, mostly without issue, but all that is about to change. Damien’s back with brand new eyes and Brielle’s Dad causes all sorts of problems in this one. His drinking ratchets up a notch or two and his irritation at Jake turns into outright hostility. On top of that, he’s dating a younger woman—a woman the halo seems to have a problem with. And when Brielle uncovers the truth about her mother’s death, she’s left in a tailspin.

Why angels and demons? Aren’t they just vampires with wings?

I get this question a lot. When I decided to write a novel, angels were the most natural thing in the world for me to examine. I’m the oldest daughter of a preacher and I have a creative flair to boot. As a church brat, I was part of a travelling team that did drama and mime, puppetry and dance. I’ve played some sort of an angelic force in more ways than I can number. Angels and demons have always been on the backdrop of my storytelling experience and when I stumbled upon the concept of the halo, an entirely new door opened up to me. It was fun to push through and let my imagination fill in the blanks.

There are a lot of angel books out there right now. What sets your books apart from the others?

Most notably, I’d say the absence of any reference to the Nephilim. I don’t examine that mythology and I don’t have characters who are part angel, part human. I went in another direction entirely and that allowed me a freedom, I think, to explore other possibilities.

Do you base your characters on people you know?

Not usually, although I did steal the identity of our door greeter at church and slip her into Broken Wings, sparkly heels and all. I do cherry pick traits from friends and family members on occasion and give them to my characters. Often similarities occur unintentionally but sometimes I go out of my way to make it happen. For example, I’ve given a character in Broken Wings the name of my youngest sister, and in Dark Halo my middle sister makes an appearance. It’s a fun way to immortalize them.

What are you working on now?

I just, JUST, signed off on the last book in the trilogy, Dark Halo. It’s such a bizarre thing to know I’ve told this entire story. Right now, I’m experimenting with two story ideas. One is a fantasy/paranormal hybrid and the other involves time travel. Soon, I’ll have to narrow it down to one and really put words on the page, but I’m enjoying the brainstorming process.

What advice would you to give an aspiring novelist?

Read. A lot. I know, I know, Stephen King already told you that. But he’s right. You need to turn your love of reading into a lifestyle. Read well and read wide. Learn to appreciate the different storytellers out there and their nuances. And then write. Put your behind in the chair and tell a story. I’d love to tell you there’s a magic spell or a secret technique, but there’s not. It’s work. Settle in and get some done.

Okay, lightning round. You ready.

Angel Eyes (Angel Eyes Trilogy #1)
by Shannon Dittemore
Release Date: May 29, 2012
Paperback/e-book
336 pages

Summary from Goodreads:
Once you’ve seen, you can’t unsee. Everything changes when you’ve looked at the world through . . .

ANGEL EYES

Brielle’s a ballerina who went to the city to chase her dreams and found tragedy instead. She’s come home to shabby little Stratus, Oregon, to live with her grief and her guilt . . . and the incredible, numbing cold she can’t seem to shake.

Jake’s the new guy at school. The boy next door with burning hands and an unbelievable gift that targets him for corruption.

Something more than fate has brought them together. An evil bigger than both of them lurks in the shadows nearby, hiding in plain sight. Two angels stand guard, unsure what’s going to happen. And a beauty brighter than Jake or Brielle has ever seen is calling them to join the battle in a realm where all human choices start.

A realm that only angels and demons—and Brielle—can perceive.

Broken Wings (Angel Eyes Trilogy #2)
By Shannon Dittemore
Release Date: February 19, 2013
Paperback/e-book
320 pages

Summary from Goodreads:
Giant angels with metal wings and visible song. A blind demon restored from the pit of darkness. And a girl who has never felt more broken.

Brielle sees the world as it really is: a place where the Celestial exists side by side with human reality. But in the aftermath of a supernatural showdown, her life begins to crumble. Her boyfriend, Jake, is keeping something from her—something important. Her overprotective father has started drinking again. He’s dating a much younger woman who makes Brielle’s skin crawl, and he’s downright hostile toward Jake. Haunting nightmares keep Brielle from sleeping, and flashes of Celestial vision keep her off kilter.

What she doesn’t know is that she’s been targeted. The Prince of Darkness himself has heard of the boy with healing in his hands and of the girl who sees through the Terrestrial Veil. When he plucks the blind demon, Damien, from the fiery chasm and sends him back to Earth with new eyes, the stage is set for a cataclysmic battle of good versus evil.

Then Brielle unearths the truth about her mother’s death and she must question everything she ever thought was true.

Brielle has no choice. She knows evil forces are converging and will soon rain their terror down upon the town of Stratus. She must master the weapons she’s been given. She must fight.

But can she fly with broken wings?

Genre: Contemporary romance
Book Release: Winter 2013

Book Blurb

“I’ve never bowed or kneeled for anyone,” Rafael said. “Never thought I would.” Then he was on his knees. He slid his arms around my waist, tugging me closer and bowed his head.

“You own me, Sophie.” He looked up, his dark eyes hitting me with enough force to snatch the breath from my lungs. “You’ve owned me from the moment I walked into your life in that music room. Then I saw you slipping out the window like the wolves were after you and I knew I wanted you in my life. You’ve wrapped yourself in my heart and mind. I can’t get you out. I don’t want to.”

Graduate opera singer, Sophie Fisher’s life is on fire and it’s not her breathtaking voice lighting it, but the trail of debts her father left behind after he passed away a few months ago. If she’s not ducking around corners or slipping out of windows to escape the debt collectors and a slew of characters sent from hell, she’s dealing with her rebellious fifteen-year-old sister, Lilli, who is still coming to terms with their father’s death. And as if that’s not enough, Rafael Van Rees bursts into her life—literally—bringing with him a set of emotions she isn’t prepared to deal with and a life the public had no idea of.

Rafael Van Rees, Maestro extraordinaire, just wants to be left in peace to date whichever woman he feels like, have dinner with whomever he feels like, and just enjoy his life. Until he meets Sophie and his past returns to haunt him. And just when he thought he didn’t care about her, his history proves him wrong. He knows when it comes to her, it’s all or nothing. Besides, she makes him feel fuzzy all over.

Is Sophie’s fire hot enough to melt the ice coursing through his veins?

EXCERPT

A crash comes out of nowhere, a sound not of water but of something solid rending, splitting, falling, followed by shill screaming.  I run to the door without thinking and the water hits me like a wall, blinding me, pushing me back.  It takes all my strength to force my way outside, where, eyes narrowed, I make out children bracing themselves, hands on knees, some down on all fours in the now-slippery earth.  The rains can be ferocious, yes, especially when they first arrive…but have they ever been like this before?  Not in my lifetime, I don’t think.
I struggle forward till I can just glimpse the cause of that solid crash, blurred through a curtain of rain: a cottage has crumbled to the ground, its roof split down the middle, its foundation collapsed under the weight of the roof and the water.  My throat tightens: that is—or was—Hannah’s dwelling.  As a widow with no sons, Hannah had no one to shore up her cottage before the rainy season.  How many years have passed since anyone’s even offered to patch her roof?
I look for Hannah herself, knowing Mother would want me to offer her shelter, but I can’t see past the crowd of taller villagers quickly forming around her cottage.  Someone will take care of her, at least.
Another crash rings out over the rain, the sound reverberating down to my bones, and before my eyes the roof of another cottage slides forward, over the still-standing walls and all the way down to the ground, as easily as mud sliding down a hillside.  And this is Emir’s house.  I saw him repairing his roof just a day or two ago.
I’m trapped in place, suddenly, my body turned solid as stone in my bewilderment and fear, even as the world is tearing to pieces before me and the rain seems determined to knock me onto my knees.  And then, through the swirl of wind and water, a single word rises, a harsh, cutting word, repeating and gathering strength like a chant:
Curse.  Curse.  Curse.  Curse.  The ark has brought this curse upon us.”

Review: Sins & Needles (The Artists Trilogy #1) by Karina Halle

(Click image to add to your to be read pile)
Title: Sins & Needles (The Artists Trilogy #1)
Author: Karina Halle
Genre: Contemporary Romance,
Format: eBook from Author
Buy: Amazon | B&N | Book Depository

Ellie Watt is used to starting over. The daughter of a grifting team, Ellie spent her childhood being used as a pawn in her parents' latest scam. Now she's much older, wiser and ready to give her con artist life a rest. But returning to the dry desert town of Palm Valley, California means one more temptation than she bargained for - Camden McQueen. Once known as the high school weirdo, Camden is bigger and badder than the boy he used to be and a talented tattoo artist with his own thriving business. Ellie's counting on Camden still being in love with her but what she's not counting on is how easily unrequited love can turn into obsession over time. When Camden discovers Ellie's plan to con him, he makes her a deal she doesn't dare refuse, but her freedom comes with a price and it's one that takes both Ellie and Camden down a dangerous road.

Sins & Needles created hype from the moment Karina announced she'll be writing a contemporary romance, then again when the cover was revealed, then again when the first few teasers were released, then again when the book was released, then again when reviews started rolling in, and the hype is still going on and on.  I am thrilled I got to be part of it all as both Karina's Cover Artist and one of her Advance Readers.

Since I'm currently in a reading slump, I don't know if it's because of stress or my lack of time to read. But when I did get a chance to read, I was so glad it was to pick up Sins & Needles. It's one of those books that takes you from your boring reality into another reality that is dark, and gloomy just like a life with no ties, no friends, and no family you can trust, just an illusion of freedom and the faint haunting of your real name keeping you company in the darkest depths of your mind.

That's the best way to describe Ellie Watt without giving away too much. Ellie Watt is our kickbutt protagonist, she's a con-artist. And she's so unpredictable even her family (meaning her uncle) is wary. Though I felt a connection with her character and loved her bluntness and attitude. I somehow saw more of her weak side. She's lost, scared, lonely, in pain, and so many other things. But there's
something about Ellie, that makes you wish you could do something to help her.

Luckily for us, Camden McQueen, her old friend from highschool shows up, transformed from a goth into a hunky, geeky successful tattoo-artist. The moment they were reunited, you begin to feel the tension between them and it doesn't stop there. It continues on until the end of the book. Camden has  his own set of ghosts and it's almost as bad as Ellie's.

Ellie is on the run from her criminal ex-boyfriend, and with that came the car chases, murder, kidnappings, fights, and a whole lot of other rich gang activities. It's frightening, but Ellie keeps it together, well almost. Ellie and Camden has one escape and that's each other. When they're together and being happy, it's almost like they're normal.

As for the writing style, I'm in awe at how flexible Karina's it is. One moment she's writing about running away and filming all the paranormal stuff that happens to people, the next she's writing about being on the road in a band tour bus and now, she's writing about being a con-artist on the run. Karina, I know you'll be reading this, and right now... I'm bowing down to your brilliance. You never cease to amaze your readers.

Overall, Sins & Needles is one roller coaster ride filled with plot twists, unpredictability and a whole lot of jaw dropping moments, including the giant cliffhanger at the ending. If I could, I would send this book to all big movie productions, in hopes that it'll be read and be turned into an awesome movie production. Talk about climbing ladders! I think Karina skipped a few steps because this book is by far one of the best contemporary romances I've ever read.

Welcome!

What inspired me to write a paranormal romance?

I write romance in all of its many sub-genres: paranormal, suspense, contemporary. The main theme is always ROMANCE. It’s what I love to write. My daughter called me one day and challenged me to write a paranormal story. It’s her favorite genre—and she doesn’t really enjoy romantic angst in other forms. Of course, I begged her to read all of my other books, so really she just wanted me to write something she would LOVE. (Although she did enjoy my other books, they just weren’t exactly her cup of tea—besides, who wants to read a romance novel written by their mother? Actually one of my other daughters is my BIGGEST fan, but I digress.) “Mom,” she said, “Let’s both write a paranormal story and see what comes of them.” I responded with, “My mind just doesn’t think that way.” Truth be told, I didn’t really want to write anything paranormal and I kinda dismissed the whole idea pretty quickly, even though I found myself promising her I’d think about a plot as we hung up.

Paranormal? Really? No way, I thought, I write about sweet ROMANCE, not things that go bump in the night. Not going to happen, I told myself. This was during the Twilight craze (has that ended?) and I figured the world had seen enough paranormal! Although I love Twilight, I admit it. Okay, back to the story. At about this same time, I was ridiculously addicted to American Idol. With the crazed excitement of a groupie, I watched every minute of the Season 8 finale.

And then it happened.

Who’d of thought that an American Idol performance could inspire a 90,000 word novel? Not me. But it did. Go figure.

*To find out which American Idol performance inspired Lancaster House, come back and follow this secret passageway to tomorrow’s post . . .  at I Am a Reader, Not a Writer in the Living Room...
