I love that point when two people in a story notice each other. Some meetings are swoon-worthy, some are the opposite of that. I thought it would be fun to share the first (or near the first) impressions…
Dean’s first impression of Addison:
I follow my PD onto the bench behind the defense table and run into someone’s shoulder on my way back through the door.
“Excuse you.” She scowls straight at me. She’s tall, gorgeous, and dark, thick, shiny hair falls straight around her face. “What?” Her blue eyes narrow.
I ignore her scowl and sit next to my PD. Pretty girls don’t normally make me nervous, but I have to take a breath to slow down my heart. I’m a moron. Being here must have put me more on edge than I thought.
And Addison’s of Dean:
I glance to my right. Not a bad looking guy, even if he needs a good scrub down. He uses a finger to scratch a tanned arm. His nearly black hair could use a cut, but longer and unkempt seems to suit him. He looks up at the teacher once through long, thick lashes. Why is it always boys who get those? Completely unfair.
And the moment when they realize what the other can do…
(They’re in the back of Addie’s car, which is driven by the driver for her family)
“No, you’re fine.” She touches my leg and I hear it clear as day. Stay.
I force myself rigid so I don’t jump across the car to get away from her. Two things run through my mind. Addison wants me in her car with her. This hits me first, because in its own way, it’s the more unbelievable of the two. And the second, is that she really can do what I do. Or something like it. What are the odds?
I put my hand on hers. Love to.
Her face snaps toward mine and just like we shocked each other, both of us pull our hands back, and she scoots until her back hits the car door. I can’t look away. And I swear I can hear her heart going as crazy as mine.
“So,” the driver starts again. “What were you saying?”
“I, uh…” Her eyes are deadlocked on me.
I can’t move. Can’t breathe. This is crazy-insane.
“Just let us out before you pick up Mom, okay?” she asks, her eyes still wide on me.
“No can do. Specific instructions.”
We’re still staring. My heart’s flying, hitting my chest harder with each beat.
“You can’t keep me in the car.” A corner of her mouth pulls up as her eyes continue to penetrate mine. Almost daring me to make the first move.
We reach for Jimmy’s shoulder at the same time.
And we know. Right in that moment. I know and she knows…
So, yeah. I had a lot of fun with these two ;-)

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Jolene kissed a boy on her high school graduation night. One
she’d wanted to kiss for a long time. They got married two years later, have
built two homes together, survived military deployments, law school, student
loan debt, and two children.
Jolene plays the guitar, takes pictures, and loves to hike.
She doesn’t like rivers, but loves the ocean. She loves to fly, but gets motion
sick. Her ultimate vacation would be to sail through the deserted islands in
The Bahamas. Two years ago, she got that wish when her parents retired on a
