Guestpost: I, Walter author, Mike Hartner's Top 10 Fav Classics

My top 10 favorite classical books
of all time and why I love them
by Mike Hartner

10.   Any Shakespeare play. The play is the thing. The emotion and the story are fantastic. My favorite of all of his plays would be either MacBeth for the drama or Taming of the Shrew for the comedy.

9. Victor Hugo. French period pieces around the revolution. Les Miserable is by far one of the best of its time.

8.  Alexandre Dumas. The Three Musketeers. This is actually a three part series of the life of D’Artagnan. And another three part series focused on others in the life of D’Artagnan.

7. Mark Twain. Huckleberry Finn, Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s CourtThese are books that were read and should be read by all children. Fantastic adventure, and social commentary on the times.
6. Jules Verne. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Fantastic adventure. Loved Nemo. The descriptions of what could be still haven’t been equaled.

5. Jules Verne. Around the World in 80 days.

4. Alexandre Dumas. The Count of Monte CristoBy far the world’s best revenge novel.

3. H.G. Wells. The Invisible Man. For imagining what we could do if we were invisible.

2. Chaucer. The Cantebury TalesEach of these poems are about a different person and job. What makes them even more interesting is that Chaucer has written quite a bit of erotica into each description. Well done, sir.

1. Bram Stoker. Dracula.

I, Walter
by Mike Hartner

Genre: YA Historical Fiction

I, Walter is the first in a series of books in a saga which will span continents and time to arrive in present day North America. Each in the series will be connected, though that connection may not be obvious for several more books.

It's almost like looking at a menorah (sic). Many lines, seemingly individual, connect to center at different points.

Walter Crofter was born into Elizabethan England. In a country and a time where favor and politics were both deadly, can an honest boy stay true to himself?

Especially given his family background?

Mike Hartner was born in Miami in 1965. He’s traveled much of the continental United States. He has several years post secondary education, and experience teaching and tutoring young adults. Hartner has owned and run a computer firm for more than twenty-five years. He now lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with his wife and child. They share the neighborhood and their son with his maternal grandparents.

Review Excerpts

"I, Walter is a grand tale of adventure that reminds me of the Patrick O'Brien's Aubrey/Maturin adventure series but with a noble innocence and, a most refreshing, charming slant. Romance, adventure, mystery, rescues, deception, and vivid descriptions make I, Walter a most enjoyable and inspirational read of chivalry. This CBR reviewer looks forward to reading more of the Crofter saga from Mike Hartner" Chanticleer Book Reviews

“This book truly is New York Best-seller material!" Charity Langley, Author

Book Blitz + Top 5 : Deadly to Promise by Mia Hoddell

Top Ten New Adult Novels! :)
by Mia Hoddell

  1. The Edge of Never by J. A. Redmerski. This book is one of the few that has actually brought tears to my eyes. Not something that is easily done!
  2. The Edge of Always by J. A. Redmerski. The sequel was just as good and just as emotional. I didn’t cry but it was definitely an emotional rollercoaster.
  3. Wait for You by J. Lynn. It was sweet, funny, sad and just a great book. I’m hooked on the author’s work now.
  4. Secrets of a Chalet Girl by Lorraine Wilson. A perfect read for the winter nights. It’s a quick novella but has a lot in it.
  5. Cassie Palmer series by Karen Chance. It’s one of the first vampire books I ever picked up and I liked how there was plenty of action, romance and a variety of paranormal beings.

Excerpt

“Have you ever been swimming here?” I asked moving my head to watch his reaction as I brought my feet up out of the water and folded them beside me.
“Yeah, most summers when I came here. We all used to use it as a way to cool off or just have some fun in between training.”
“How about skinny dipping?” I asked my grin growing due to the thoughts running through my head.
“Why? You want to try it?” he challenged.
“Only if you go first,” I laughed but stopped instantly when he removed his shirt and tossed it behind us. My eyes widened in surprise and I started to regret my words. “You’re not being serious are you?” I stuttered as he pulled off his shoes, throwing them over to where his shirt was crumpled.
“You can’t chicken out now Rea. It was your idea,” he said smiling as he removed each sock, teasing me as they ended up with the rest of his discarded garments.
I just stared at him, my lips moving but not making a sound as I tried to find an excuse.
He laughed at me. “Relax Rea, I’m just teasing you. Well unless you’ve changed your mind. In that case I’m being deadly serious.” He had a cheeky grin on his face as he spoke and I pushed him hard, toppling him into the water below.
There was a lot of splashing but Kai surfaced finally, taking a deep breath as he flicked the hair out of his eyes. I was clutching my stomach in fits of laughter as I bent over. The shock on his face was priceless.
“Oh you are so dead Rea, so, so dead,” he said, his voice ragged as the cold water and shock affected his half naked body. I just continued to laugh as he floated in front of me, his head bobbing up and down in a comical way.

About the Author

Mia Hoddell lives in the UK with her family and two cats. She spends most of her time writing or reading and loves anything paranormal. Mia always had a love of writing but never reading. She was more interested in sports and hated sitting still - despite getting three poems published before the age of sixteen. Finally though, she found some novels that captured her interest and developed a love of reading which is now one of her favourite hobbies.

Mia began with poems before moving on to short stories. Although she enjoyed this, Mia found she had too much to tell with too little space, so later on she created her first series 'The Wanderer Trilogy' and from there other ideas have emerged. With a total of nine books planned at this moment, she is busy working on her second series 'Elemental Killers' before moving onto the next idea on her ever growing list.

Guestpost + Steamy Teasers : The Marriage Diaries by Erika Wilde

MAN CHESTS OR COUPLES?

I love all my covers for The Marriage Diaries, and they were pretty easy to design because the main couple of the series is married.  The same couple is on every cover, but in a different pose and it just works for the set of books.  But now I’m getting ready to start a new spin-off series to The Marriage Diaries called THE PLAYERS CLUB, and I have to rethink a new look and cover concept for this brand new series.
I really do love having “couples” on a cover.  I think it gives the reader a good feel for the characters and sets the tone of the book/story inside.  I especially like covers of a couple in a sexy or erotic embrace.  But THE PLAYERS CLUB is going to be a hero focused/driven series, and I was wondering if I should change things up and go with a hero-only cover.  Like those hot, sexy “man chest” type covers that are swoon worthy.  I really can’t decide!

What is your personal preference when it comes to covers?  Do you like seeing a couple on the cover, or does a hot hunk catch your attention?

Title: The Marriage Diaries (The Marriage Diaries #1 - #4)
Author: Erika Wilde
Genre: Erotic Romance 18+
Publication Date: September 11, 2013
Cover Design: Novel Cover Designs
Event organized by: Literati Author Services, Inc.

Synopsis
Erika Wilde turns up the heat in THE MARRIAGE DIARIES, an erotic series about a married couple who take intimacy and passion to the extreme.
After nearly twenty years of marriage, Jillian Noble is ready to put some spice back into her sex life with her gorgeous husband, Dean. After seducing him at his office, Jillian reveals what she wants, and her husband is more than happy to oblige. Erotic fantasies are fulfilled, and forbidden passions surface as they open themselves up to a provocative world where boundaries are pushed to the limit and pleasure is the ultimate goal.
But Dean has a dark past, and even darker desires that he’s kept a tight rein on all these years. When he gives his wife a taste of his more illicit appetite, will she embrace his carnal needs, or beg for mercy?
WARNING: Contains explicit sexual content and is recommended for mature readers who enjoy erotic situations, as well as graphic language and imagery.

The Marriage Diaries boxed set is on sale for $.99 (normally $3.99) until December 1st.

About the Author
Erika Wilde (aka Janelle Denison) is the USA Today bestselling author of over 50 contemporary romances for multiple print publishers. So, why the new pen name?
As Janelle Denison I’ve always written sexy books, but lately my writing has taken on more erotic elements that I wanted to keep separate for readers because not everyone likes their reading material on the spicier, kinkier side of romance. However, please be assured that even as Erika Wilde, you will still get an emotionally layered story with characters you’ll care about and fall in love with. That is always my goal, whether I’m writing straight contemporary romances, or more erotically charged stories.
Currently, I’m working on The Marriage Diaries and making sure that Dean and Jillian enjoy exploring the more erotic side to their marriage. The series will be on-going, with no foreseeable ending as of right now, for as long as readers want to be voyeurs to Dean and Jillian’s sizzling new relationship.
I’m also planning a spin-off series in the future, featuring the hot military men that work security for Dean at Noble and Associates. My next book, THE INVITATION, will introduce the men of that new series, THE PLAYERS CLUB.

Guestpost : When Stars Die: The Romance Element (by Amber Skye Forbes)

Hey all, Please welcome Amber Skye Forbes writing about the Romance element of her book 'When Stars Die'!

When Stars Die by Amber Skye Forbes
October 2013

Amelia Gareth's brother is a witch and the only way to save her family from the taint in his blood is to become a professed nun at Cathedral Reims. However, in order to become professed, she must endure trials that all nuns must face.

Surviving these trials is not easy, especially for Amelia, who is being stalked by shadowy beings only she can see. They're searching for people they can physically touch, because only those they can touch can see them. Amelia soon learns why she is being stalked when she accidentally harms her best friend with fire during the third trial. Fire is a witch's signature. The shadows are after witches.

Now Amelia must decide what to do: should she continue on her path to profession knowing there is no redemption, or should she give up on her dream and turn away from Cathedral Reims in order to stop the shadows who plan to destroy everything she loves?

When Stars Die: The Romance Element
I never used to be that fond of romance in books. I used to think that romance was something that eventually happened to everyone, and that romance was so messy anyway; thus, why would I want to read it in a book? I also used to think there were only so many scenarios one could write about romance before the entire genre became stale. I am still not fond of pure romance books. A prerequisite for these books is often a happy ending, and so if I know the protagonist and love interest are going to end up together, why should I care what happens in between? I like romance books where a happy ending isn't predictable--like The Fault in Our Stars, for example. For the most part, however, I love romance as a sub-plot because the main plot can screw with the romance in a thousand delightful ways that make the romance itself unpredictable.
This brings me to my own book, When Stars Die, being released by AEC Stellar Publishing in October. Originally I didn't even want When Stars Die to have any sort of romance label attached to it. When Stars Die is a very dark book, and I felt that by attaching the romance label to it would immediately water down what the entire book is actually about. But as I was writing the protagonist and her love interest, I realized that in order to have the ending work out the way I wanted it to, I had to develop the romance. I had to push it beyond a simple sub-plot and move it into the main plot.
So I began to make the changes necessary to have a fully-fleshed ending. As I was writing the development between main character, Amelia Gareth, and her love interest, Oliver Cromwell, I began to realize that the romance wasn't watering down the darkness of the book. If anything, the romance was making the book even darker--darker than I had originally imagined. Their love is forbidden, and while forbidden love isn't original, they're also best friends at the start of the book and have had feelings for some time. It isn't like Amelia and Oliver just met and fell in love one-hundred pages later. In fact, I want to argue that Amelia never really falls in love with Oliver. And, of course, Oliver's love is highly questionable as well. Their attraction for one another is arguably dark. Amelia is a witch and an aspiring nun, and Oliver is a priest. Witches are hated in her world, but, in the beginning, Oliver doesn't seem to care.
When I finished developing their romance, I began to fall in love with the idea of romance as a sub-plot. As I've said, the main plot has the potential to make sub-plot romances unpredictable. But for a while I did toy with whether or not to consider When Stars Die just paranormal or actual paranormal romance. I just didn't want to choose the latter because I didn't want to fall into any trend and make people think that the book was heavily romance-based. It does have romance, and the romance is a huge part of the book, but the book is steeped in darkness more than anything else. However, I began to accept that When Stars Die is a paranormal romance because the book can't function without that romance element. And it doesn't matter whether or not people think I'm falling into a trend and trying to capitalize off it.
I wrote the book I wanted, and that's all that matters to me. In any case, I started this story at fifteen before paranormal romance exploded. I just had to shelve it for a few years while I matured as both a human being and writer.

Looking back, I wonder if I had an inkling that my life was about to go from ordinary to extraordinary.
When sixteen-year-old Lillie Hart meets the gorgeous and mysterious Tom Windsor-Smith for the first time, it’s like fireworks — for her, anyway. Tom looks as if he would be more interested in watching paint dry; as if he is bored by her and by her small Nebraskan town in general.
But as Lillie begins to break down the walls of his seemingly impenetrable exterior, she starts to suspect that he holds the answers to her reoccurring nightmares and to the impossible memories which keep bubbling to the surface of her mind — memories of the two of them, together and in love.
When she at last learns the truth about their connection, Lillie discovers that Tom has been hiding an earth-shattering secret; a secret that is bigger — and much more terrifying and beautiful — than the both of them. She also discovers that once you finally understand that the world is round, there is no way to make it flat again.
An epic and deeply original sci-fi romance, taking inspiration from Albert Einstein’s theories and the world-bending wonder of true love itself.

Guest Post: Art Imitating Art. Taking Inspiration from the Classics

Aldous Huxley took inspiration from Shakespeare when writing Brave New World [IMAGE SUPPLIED]. And, in a case of art imitating art, Conan Doyle modeled Sherlock Holmes on C.

Auguste Dupin, a fictional detective created by Edgar Allan Poe. Stephanie Meyer has said that Eclipse was inspired by Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte (even though she apparently dislikes the book!). And James Joyce famously channeled Homer in Ulysses (which I have tried to read about ten times).

It seems that creativity breeds creativity (and intertextuality!).
There were a number of inspirations for When the World was Flat (and we were in love), including a variety of films, music and locations. A major muse, however, was Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.

I would definitely say that Lillie is prideful like Elizabeth Bennet and Tom is prejudiced like Mr. Darcy (who is my biggest fictional crush of all time), but aside from similarities between the characters, there are two scenes in When the World was Flat (and we were in love) which were modeled on my favorite moments in Pride and Prejudice.

The first was inspired by the scene where Mr. Darcy proposes to Elizabeth. That moment breaks my heart every time I either read or watch it, because he goes about it ALL WRONG! For one, he tells her that he loves her in spite of himself.

Excerpt from Pride and Prejudice:

"In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you."

In When the World was Flat (and we were in love), there is a scene in a clearing where Tom comes close to telling Lillie the truth about their connection. He is completely putting himself out there and she shuts him down because at that point she thinks he is spoilt and arrogant. I am not going to share an excerpt though, because it contains some spoilers!

The second scene inspired by Pride and Prejudice is when Lillie visits the estate where Tom lives – Rose Hill. There is an awkward meeting between the two, just like the unexpected encounter between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth when she is caught having a sticky-beak at Pemberley.

Excerpt from Pride and Prejudice:

They were within twenty yards of each other, and so abrupt was his appearance, that it was impossible to avoid his sight. Their eyes instantly met, and the cheeks of both were overspread with the deepest blush. He absolutely started, and for a moment seemed immovable from surprise; but shortly recovering himself, advanced towards the party, and spoke to Elizabeth, if not in terms of perfect composure, at least of perfect civility.

Excerpt from When the World was Flat (and we were in love):

Tom paused when he saw us and, in that moment, he looked like some kind of modern day Mr. Darcy on the steps of Pemberley.

As you can tell from the short excerpt above, Rose Hill was inspired by Pemberley (the amazing estate belonging to Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice). Rose Hill is a more modern building (by another two hundred years or so!) than the Sixteenth Century Chatsworth House, which is said to have inspired Pemberley
. Chatsworth House is also where they filmed part of the 1995 movie there (the one with Keira Knightly and Matthew Macfadyen).

When he arrives at Rose Hill, one of the characters (Jackson) comments to Lillie that he should have brought his fishing rod when he sees the large rectangular lake.

Excerpt from When the World was Flat (and we were in love):

As Jackson drove down the avenue of trees, I caught glimpses of freshly mown grass and a man-made lake, rectangular like the Reflecting Pool in DC, but deep and dark. I wound down the window to breathe in the fresh air and listen to the trill of birds as they flitted through the branches. Red birds. Like in my dream, I realized with a start.

The tires crunched on the white gravel, sounding like someone shushing us – or shushing Jackson, who was commenting on the size of the lake and wondering about catfish.
“I should have brought my rod.”
Shhh. Shhh. Shhh.
I was thinking of the scene in Pride and Prejudice where Mr. Darcy generously offers his stream to Mr. Gardiner (apparently a big deal back then!):

Excerpt from Pride and Prejudice:

The conversation soon turned upon fishing; and she heard Mr. Darcy invite him, with the greatest civility, to fish there as often as he chose while he continued in the neighborhood, offering at the same time to supply him with fishing tackle, and pointing out those parts of the stream where there was usually most sport. Mrs. Gardiner, who was walking arm-in-arm with Elizabeth, gave her a look expressive of wonder.

I am joining a long list of authors who have taken inspiration from Pride and Prejudice. Helen Fielding loosely based Bridget Jones's Diary on Pride and Prejudice. And it is said that Elizabeth Gaskell was one of the first to pay homage to the work with North and South in 1855 (although it was not publicly acknowledged). Not to mention the stream of parodies and spin-offs like Fitzwilliam Darcy, Rock Star by Heather Lynn Rigaud and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith (which I actually own).

Of course, there is also a lot of originality in these adaptations as well, just like in When the World was Flat (and we were in love). The last time I checked there were certainly no sci fi elements in Pride and Prejudice (although there could be another spin off that fixes that)!

Jenny Schmidt is a young woman with old heartaches. A small town Texas girl with big city attitude, she just doesn’t fit in. Not that she has ever tried...

Her life is thrown into chaos when she receives a message from her thought-to-be-dead grandfather, Billy Moonsong. After meeting with him, Jenny learns that her Apache ancestors were feared monster hunters on the plains of West Texas, and that she is next in line to take up the mantle.

The Moonsongs Anthology 1 collects the first three Moonsongs books--a series of New Adult paranormal-horror-action novelettes--in one exciting volume. Follow Jenny and her best friend Marshal on their dangerous quest to unlock the secrets of her past.

These stories contain language and content better suited for readers 17+

Three Tricks To Not Getting Eaten By A Werewolf

By Jenny & Marshal

E.J. WESLEY: I recently sat down with Jenny—the leading lady and monster huntress from my Moonsongs series—and her best friend Marshal to have them share some tips on tackling werewolves. Here’s what they came up with:

JENNY: *scowls* I don’t know, run like hell? I’m playing Call of Duty here…

MARSHAL: Shush! These folks are after some serious advice. *whispers* And you do this for money now, so try to act like a professional. *primps hair* Will this be a video recording?

JENNY: *sighs* I just got knifed in the back by the biggest loser in the match. Thanks for that. Well, now that my Online reputation has been completely sullied, I guess I need to live up to something. Here goes…

1) Run Like Hell

JENNY: You thought I was kidding? Seriously, no one confronts these things on purpose. I was baited into my first encounter with a werewolf, and was damned lucky to get Marshal out alive—

MARSHAL: Me? I do recall you having a pretty close call yourself.

JENNY: Hey, you’re the one that hid in the truck.

MARSHAL: *crosses arms* I didn’t hide—

JENNY: *grins* Whatever you did, I’m pretty sure I saved your ass.

MARSHAL: True. Okay, what she said. Just run if you can.

2) Be The Aggressor

MARSHAL: *raises eyebrows* You just told them to run.

JENNY: Remind me, which one of us was appointed as an Apache monster huntress, and received a super secret, old as hell monster hunting journal handed down through the generations by her tribal ancestors?

MARSHAL: And remind me, who is helping you decode said journal, and sticking his neck out for you for no really good reason other than being a friend with no other friends in this little West Texas town?

JENNY: Touché. My point is, throw logic out the window. It’s about survival. A werewolf doesn’t have anything else on its mind other than turning you into a giant-sized Scooby Snack. Assuming you can’t get out of the confrontation, you need to have one thing on your mind: Make it dead. Fast.

3) Be A Good Shot

JENNY: Look, if you let a werewolf get close to you, it’s going to eat your face off.

MARSHAL: Truth.

JENNY: So, the best bet is to get real comfy with a rifle. Preferably one loaded with liquid-metal-filled bullets.

MARSHAL: *clears throat to sound official* And what kind of metal works best?

JENNY: You’re Anderson Cooper now? Sheesh. *shakes head* Mercury, silver—whatever. The point is, if you don’t get that metal into their bloodstream via a vital organ, it’s probably going to be game over for player one. Werewolves heal superfast, so superficial wounds really only tick them off. Put a bullet in their heart or brain and get on with the show.

MARSHAL: *pats Jenny on the shoulder* See, that wasn’t so bad. I think you gave some good advice!

JENNY: You want some good advice? If you want to keep that hand, you should probably quit touching me with it and let me get back to my game.

MARSHAL: *sighs* You’re so touchy.

You can read more of Jenny and Marshal’s exploits in: Blood Fugue, Moonsongs Book 1Witch’s Nocturne, Moonsongs Book 2Dark Prelude, Moonsongs Book 3Moonsongs Anthology 1 (collects all three stories)

Blog Tour: Supernatural Fun Facts, a Guestpost by Sherry Soule

 “Supernatural Fun Facts”
Today’s post is provided by author Sherry Soule, who is celebrating the release of her newest novel, IMMORTAL ECLIPSE. If you like supernatural suspense mingled with a dash of chick-lit and a healthy dose of paranormal romance, then this is the book for you!
Sherry has put together three supernatural fun facts about her newest novel. In this post, you can learn more about the intriguing, supernatural legends that makeup the eerie world of the Summerwind Mansion.

Supernatural Fun Fact #1
A doppelganger is believed to be a ghostly double of a living person that haunts its living counterpart. Although pop culture references to doppelgängers—a German word translating to double-walker—are often used to describe people who resemble one another, the word has a rich and often sinister history, which has more to do with ghost stories. The fact that the apparition is presumed in most cultures to be a specter from the grave, may well account for the macabre reaction bestowed upon the doppelganger encounter.

In any case, a person is presumably being stalked by his own ghost, which not only provokes some complex questions about out-of-body experiences, but also conveys the conspicuous implication that the subject’s own time is up. There have even been several famous accounts of doppelgangers throughout history. Poet Percy Bysshe Shelley saw his in a dream, and Abraham Lincoln saw his doppelganger as a second face in the mirror. Both men saw them shortly before their deaths.

Have you ever seen your own doppelganger?

Supernatural Fun Fact #2
You hear footsteps upstairs when you know no one is up there. Doors slam unaccountably. Lights flicker. Unexplained shadows. The feeling of being watched…

These may be indications that your house is haunted. Paranormal experts say that a haunted house is described as a residence that is believed to have paranormal activity. Haunted houses are often regarded to contain the lost souls of deceased people who have lived on the property.

A haunted house can also contain poltergeists and malevolent entities, such as demons. Temperature fluctuations in certain rooms may prove it was the scene of at least one nefarious plot. Ghosts are considered the life force that remains after a person or an animal loses its physical existence. The ability to perceive this disembodied soul is considered by some to be a gift (or curse) of Second Sight or another sixth sense.
So, do you believe a house can be haunted by ghosts or other things that go bump in the night?
Supernatural Fun Fact #3
The 'art' of magic is an attempt to alter events by an unnatural, inexplicable, and unscientific method. Black magic has been traditionally referred to as the use of mystical powers for evil and/or selfish purposes. Black magic refers to magical practices that can cause misfortune, sickness, or even death to others. It is believed to be an ancient science that made use of chants combined with the power of thought to bring about results. These chants are very powerful. Just like positive thoughts can be used to bring good fortune, negative thoughts can bring about misfortune, too. The darkest of all the black arts is undoubtedly necromancy, the ancient ritual of resurrecting the dead.

Do you believe black magic can harm its intended victim? Have you ever been a victim of it?
